Lightsource was founded in London in 2010 by Nick Boyle. The original premise was simple: utility-scale solar, done well, would scale faster than anyone in the industry expected — but only if it was done by an integrated team that owned development, construction, and asset management end-to-end, rather than handing projects off between specialists.
By 2017 the bet was clear. bp PLC acquired a 43% stake in 2017 and increased it to 50% in 2018, creating the joint venture that exists today. By 2024, bp had moved to fully integrate Lightsource into its consolidated business — but Lightsource bp continues to operate as the renewables-development-and-operations arm of the global bp group, with its own management, brand, and project-financing model.
Today we have a multi-gigawatt operational portfolio, a deeper development pipeline, and active operations across 19 countries on four continents.
