Each pattern below is rendered in the YMCA of Central Virginia design language — real branch and program photography, Sofia Sans typography (substituting proprietary Cachet), brand-blue and signature-purple accents. Patterns map to the universal SECTION-PATTERNS.md field contract; the visual rendering is unique to this design system.
announcement-bar
Slim strip above main nav. One sentence + optional CTA. Used for time-sensitive moments — annual campaign kickoff, branch closure, summer-camp registration deadline, weather closures.
nav
Primary site navigation. Logo-lockup on the left, text-only links + a primary "Join the Y" CTA on the right. On scroll, transparent over hero fills with white background.
hero-photo-led
Top-of-homepage. Editorial program photography behind a short Sofia Sans 800 headline + lede + two CTAs. Bottom-up scrim ensures text legibility over light photography.
The Y is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Central Virginia for 170 years. Four branches, three areas of focus.
hero-centered
Typography-only hero. No photo. Used on the give page and other landings where typography + a clear ask carries more weight than another program shot.
100% of Annual Campaign funds support scholarships. The Y has never turned a neighbor away in 170 years. Help us keep that streak going.
Give Nowintro-statement
Single editorial paragraph block. Often follows hero. Sets tone with one clear, invitational statement — in YCVA's voice, that means quantified honesty about who the Y is for and how it works.
Founded in 1855, the YMCA of Central Virginia is one of the oldest community organizations in the region. Today we operate four branches across Lynchburg, Forest, and Madison Heights, plus the Little Scholars Academy childcare program serving working families. Every program connects to one of three areas of focus that have guided the Y since the 1800s.

story-prose
Long-form founding-story narrative for an About page. Two to six paragraphs, optional pull-quote that highlights one line.
The YMCA of Central Virginia was founded in Lynchburg in 1855 — one of the earliest YMCAs in the United States, established just a decade after the global movement began in London. The first YCVA met in a borrowed room downtown with a handful of young men looking for a place to read, talk, and look out for each other in a fast-changing industrial city.
Through 170 years, two world wars, the Spanish flu pandemic, the civil rights era, and a global rebuild after COVID, the Y has stayed in Lynchburg. We've moved buildings, opened new branches, expanded into childcare, added pools, expanded into Forest and Madison Heights. We've never closed.
Today the YCVA operates four branches: the original Downtown YMCA on Church Street, the YMCA on Old Forest Rd (our largest), Jamerson Family YMCA on Wiggington, and Little Scholars Academy on Memorial Ave. We serve more than 9,000 active members, 4,200 kids in youth programs, 1,200 financial-assistance recipients, and we award $487,000 in scholarships every year.
What hasn't changed since 1855: spirit, mind, and body — the Y's three areas of focus from day one. Today we call them youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The names update; the work doesn't.
beliefs-list → distinctives-list
Reframed for community-Y. Originally doctrinal distinctives; here it becomes the "what makes the Y the Y" list — the values that distinguish a YMCA from a commercial gym.
Regardless of age, income, race, gender, ability, or faith. The Y has been an integrated community space in Lynchburg since well before integration was the law.
Financial assistance available for membership AND every program. Application is one page. We've never turned a neighbor away in 170 years.
The original three-fold mission of the YMCA since 1844. Today we call them youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Same idea.
The YCVA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Every dollar that comes in supports the mission — we don't pay shareholders, we pay scholarships.
Members get free access to most YMCAs nationwide through the Nationwide Membership program — bring your YCVA card, drop in anywhere.
The YCVA is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from across Central Virginia. The community runs the Y.
cta-band
Full-width call-to-action band between sections. Once per page max. The dark navy gives it weight; the white primary CTA puts the action above everything else.
No long-term contract. Free orientation, child-watch included, scholarships available for anyone who needs them — no questions about why.
ways-to-give → give-options
Reframed for community-Y. Originally donation methods; here it becomes the "how to support the Y" panel — one-time, monthly, sponsor-a-child, planned giving.
Give once, in any amount, online or by mail. Tax-deductible, applied to current campaign year.
Recurring donations are the fuel of the campaign — predictable, low-friction, sustainable.
$540 covers full summer camp. $720 covers a year of after-school care. Pick a tier.
closing-block
Final editorial moment before footer — reassurance + the phone number. The directive close that says "if anything we've shown you raises a question, just call."
Most of our membership conversations start at the front desk, not online. If you have something specific you're trying to figure out, the fastest path is the phone or a walk-in.
footer
Site-wide footer. Brand stack on the left, three nav columns, copyright + EIN bar at the bottom. Always carry the 501(c)(3) line and EIN — trust signal in the nonprofit world.
Strengthening Central Virginia communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility since 1855. A 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
image-right-text-left
Two-column row — text on left, image on right. The most common editorial layout. Pair with the flip variant for visual rhythm.
The hours between school pickup and a working parent's commute home are when most kids in Central Virginia get into the most trouble. Y after-school care fills that exact gap — homework time, structured play, snacks, plus a daily dose of physical activity.
320 K–5th-grade students currently in our after-school program. About one-third on financial assistance. Zero kids waiting on a list.
image-left-text-right
Flipped variant of the above. Identical fields, opposite layout. Used to alternate visual rhythm in mid-page editorial sections.
5:00 to 6:00 pm at every branch, every Friday, year-round. Free with any family membership. Bring the floaties, bring the cousins, bring the kid who's still nervous in the deep end.
The shallow end is open all hour. Lifeguards on duty. Pool noodles included.

The Y is the only place I see all my neighbors. After my husband passed, the morning aquatics class is what got me out of the house.
I came to the Y for the pool. I stayed because they covered my granddaughter's camp the summer my daughter lost her job.
Marcus runs the swim program. He didn't sell me on a class — he matched me with the right one for where I actually was.
